This Bergen County backyard project combined hardscaping and landscaping into one complete solution. The retaining wall addressed a persistent slope and drainage problem while creating usable flat yard space. The evergreen planting design was laid out to look intentional now and grow full and natural over time. Our Process
Site Assessment & Retaining Wall Design
We evaluated the slope grade and identified drainage problem areas across the yard. A retaining wall layout was designed to address both structural support and water displacement, with materials selected to complement the existing property.
Retaining Wall Construction
We excavated along the slope to establish a proper foundation, built the retaining wall to manage grade change and redirect runoff away from the home, then backfilled and compacted behind the wall to create usable flat yard space.
Planting Design & Evergreen Installation
A planting layout was developed to look intentional now and grow full and natural over time. Evergreens suited to Bergen County's climate were selected for low maintenance, year-round color, and privacy — planted at proper spacing to allow for natural spread and long-term density.
Sod Installation
Soil was prepared with grading and topsoil where needed. Fresh sod was laid across the usable yard area for an immediate clean lawn, with edges finished cleanly around the wall and planting beds.
